Local swimmers compete in senior meets
Mary and Joshua Hanson competed in the Long Course Senior Championship meet in Clovis July 10 – 13,
representing Bakersfield Swim Club. This meet was attended by several hundred senior swimmers from as
far away as Boston, Massachusetts, including several swimmers who had recently returned from competing
in the US Olympic Trials in Omaha.
Joshua Hanson swam seven events at the meet, and advanced to the finals in three events, finishing the
200M back in 20th place in 2:25.78, an improvement of more than nine seconds, the 100M breast in 11th
place in 1:14.03, and the 200M IM in 19th place in 2:26.58. In the breast and IM events he was the fastest 14
year-old. He also swam personal bests in the 1500M free in 18:20.45, the 100M free in 1:01.36, and the 400M
free in 4:41.11, a drop of more than 10 seconds.
Joshua’s sister Mary swam six events at the meet and achieved new personal bests in all six events. She
finished third in the 100M back in 1:06.58, and fourth in the 200M back in 2:29.06. She was tenth in the 100M
free in 1:00.88, 14th in prelims in the 400M free in 4:46.04, 10th in the 1500M free in 19:05.65, a drop of 23
seconds, and the 100M fly in 1:10.84.
On July 17-20 Mary competed in the 2008 California/Nevada Sectional Championships in Bakersfield. More
than 900 swimmers were entered in the meet. Mary qualified for eight events, and swam six events plus one
time trial. Her top finish came on the last day of the meet in the 100M back where she was 15th in the prelims
in 1:07.72, and finished 11th in finals in 1:06.20, which is a Junior National qualifying time, and would have
taken sixth place overall if she had been in the championship heat (top eight swimmers in prelims).
“Her morning swim was a little bit off and she wound up in the consolation finals, but the evening
performance was a new personal best. She’s dropped more than two seconds this season and is just 1.61
seconds off the 2008 Olympic Trial cut”, said her father/coach Grant Hanson. “The 2012 cuts will be faster, but
it’s great that she’s so close. We plan to skip Junior Nationals, and go to the Short Course National
Championships in November.”
Mary’s other results from the Sectional Championships include 34th in the 200M back in 2:26.92, 50M free
in 27.95, 100M free in 1:00.77, 200M free in 2:12.54, 400M IM in 5:17.64, and the 100M fly in 1:10.87.  She
finished the meet by leading off the Bakersfield 400M medley relay with a 1:06.51 100M backstroke split.
Mary and Joshua Hanson, as well as Alan Sloan and Cedrick Tesdall will be traveling to Fresno  this week
for the CCS Long Course Junior Olympic Championships.
On August 5-8 Mary and Joshua will finish up the season at the Western Zone Championships in Gresham
Oregon.
Mary and Joshua Hanson display their awards last February from the Central
California Swim Championships.
