Spectacular fireworks set for July 4
Cost increases could make this year’s event the last of its kind
Organizers of the Community July 4th Fireworks
Show have lined up food, fun – and a big stack of
boom – for the annual Independence Day tradition
at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds.
The public is invited to take advantage of free
admission to the fairgrounds beginning at 6 p.m.
for all the fun before the fireworks, said Steve
Morgan, who spearheads the fireworks show each
year for its principal sponsor, the Ridgecrest Lions
Club.
Station Street Band will play sets of live music
while visitors check out the hot rods and tricked-out
rides of the High Desert Car Club and other car
enthusiasts. Anyone interested in enteringvehicle in
the show can call Morgan for more information at
375-2715.
Food and drink including hamburgers, hot dogs,
ice cream and chili will be available from the Lions
and Knights of Columbus. A shaved ice shack and
cold beer will help the crowd beat the heat.
A variety of novelties will also be on sale to help
the Lions defray the estimated $25,000 cost of the
event.
Then at 9 p.m., the annual fireworks show will
light up the night sky with colorful bursts
choreographed to music.
Because of a staggering $5,000 increase in the
cost of the event —mostly due to increases in the
cost of pyrotechnics and licensed pyrotechnic
services — organizers are concerned that fund-
raising efforts may not reach their goal. Currently
the club has raised $17,500 and needs about
$7,500 more.
To keep this year’s show from being the last of
its kind, the community is encouraged to support
the event financially.
Donors can contact Morgan at the number
above or send donations to the Ridgecrest Lions
Fireworks Fund, P.O. Box 2301, Ridgecrest, CA
93556.
