A lengthy protest hearing revealed that many residents
oppose placing a recycling-trash collection fee on Kern County
property tax rolls, the city’s preferred method of billing for
protestors failed to raise the number of signatures required to
overturn the city’s proposal.
The July 1 hearing was the latest step in the city’s attempt to
implement a state-mandated recycling program, which would
be performed in conjunction with trash-collection by Benz
Sanitation.

Trona resident Martha Shoaf celebrates a special
milestone - her 90th birthday. Martha is still very
active in the Matruango Museum Docent League
and frequently gives presentations about her
experiences at Manzanar, where she served as a
teacher during World War II. "With all Martha does,
we think 90 might be her speed limit rather than
her age," said one of her many friends.
