Outlook conf. to focus on bright future
The 23rd annual Indian Wells Valley Economic Outlook Conference and Business Expo, set for Thurs.,
Feb. 11, will focus on the well-known saying, “When life hands you lemons…”
Dr. Michael Steinberger, originally announced as a speaker, was unable to attend this year — but the
Chamber is “making lemonade” with a tasty panel of speakers focusing on a future that rises above recent
economic setbacks.
First on the program this year but not new to the community, Dr. Douglas E. Roberts, Jr., will bring three
decades of experience as a local specialist in internal medicine to bear on the topic of health care in
Ridgecrest — focusing on the development of the Heather Stone Clinic after the closure of Drummond
Medical Group.
Dr. Roberts, who grew up in Maryland, earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medi-cine in Philadelphia. He interned at the USC County Medical Health Center, then worked as a
physician for the Indian Health Service in Claremore, Okla.
When Drummond Medical Group sent him a recruiting packet, he responded because he wanted to return
to Southern California.
Like many another newcomer, he thought he wouldn’t stay long — and 30 years later he is still serving the
needs of local patients as the owner of Heather Stone Medical Clinic.
Also scheduled are local experts on new developments at Inyokern Airport, trends in local real estate, the
BRAC-related building boom at China Lake and our valley’s alternate-energy situation.
In recognition of a significant year from the oldest community in our valley, a representative of the Inyokern
Chamber of Com-merce will present a few photos of old Inyokern and give information on a series of
centennial improvements designed to enhance the attractiveness of this portal to our valley.
The Kerr McGee Center will open at 7 a.m. for continental breakfast and an opportunity to visit the booths of
the Business Expo. The program will get underway at 8:00 a.m. to accommodate an agenda full of new ideas,
and will conclude at noon.
Sponsorships are being sought to help fund the expenses associated with the event. “A sponsorship is a
great way to support economic development and get your name out to people who matter,” said Chamber
CEO Jan Bennett.
Admission to the conference and expo will be $30 by Feb. 5 or $35 at the door. Reserved tables of eight
are available at $250 each. Reservations and tickets are available through the Ridgecrest Chamber office,
760-375-8331, or email chamber@ridgenet.net.
