Murray Mathletes celebrate their successes following the annual Kern County Math Counts competition, held
Saturday, Feb. 2, at California State University, Bakersfield.  Ten schools from across the county participated.
The Murray team of Franklin Floresca, Zachary Flatebo, Chad Cracraft, and Lara Luu took second place for
their scores in the Sprint Round, the Target Round, and the Team Round. They won individual silver medals.
Franklin and Chad placed fifth and ninth respectively in the Count Down Round for which they won individual
trophies. Floresca won another individual award for being the team’s high scorer. The team will advance to
the state Math Counts competition March 20 at U.C. Irvine. Murray students Jennifer Kandell, Hannah Van
Nevel, Ashley Flatman, and Jacob Haw also traveled to CSUB and competed as individuals.

Burroughs High School graduate Kalie Weich’s painting “Water” (pictured) will be donated to the Indian Wells
Valley Water District Board of Directors at its March 8 meeting. Weich’s  original work resulted from a senior
project at BHS. Art instructor Mark Archer will present the painting to the board. “As part of their senior project,
students are asked to think critically and respond creatively using the materials at hand to create works of art
to enhance the aesthetics of our community and to inspire and link the creative endeavors of one generation
with all others,” said Archer. Three outstanding examples of residential xeriscape will also be honored at the
meeting.

Grove discussed with the club her candidacy for the 32nd Assembly District as well as her connection to the
Ridgecrest community as owner of Continental Labor and Staffing.

The characters portrayed by CLOTA newcomers Rachel Schmalenberger and Andrew Gray in the Community
Light Opera and Theater Associ-ation's upcoming production, “Proof,” are both adept at higher mathematics,
but commutative algebra is not dominating their thoughts in this tender moment.  “Proof” premieres at
CLOTA?Center Stage, 1425 N. Inyo St., this Friday, March 5.  David Auburn’s award-winning drama is
recommended for mature audiences.  Doors will open at 7 p.m., and  stage lights go up at 7:30.  Additional
evening presentations are set for March 6, 12, 13, 19 and  20.  A 2 p.m. Sunday matinee is planned for March
14, with doors opening at 1:30.  Tickets are at Red Rock Books at $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors,
students, enlisted active-duty military and CLOTA members. For opening night and the Sunday matinee, all
