Ridgecrest recipients of Kern Council of Governments Regional Awards show off their awards
after receiving them Thursday evening at the Petroleum Club of Bakersfield from Mayor Steven
Morgan, Kern COG’s chairman this year. From left are Jan Bennett, Ridgecrest Chamber of
Commerce CEO; Mike Avery, retired Ridgecrest city manager; and Jinny DeAngeles, CEO of
Desert Area Resources and Training. The three awards were a pretty hefty percentage of only 13
presented countywide this year. Bennett, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award honoring
her impressive contributions to the economic well-being of our community, singled out her
husband, Skip, for thanks. “I couldn’t have done it without him,” she said. Also receiving a Lifetime
Achievement Award, Avery thanked the friends and colleagues acquired during his 30 years of
service to Ridgecrest. He loved the work, he said, but now “I don’t miss it at all!” The award to
DeAngelis was for community involvement in a challenging job that makes her everything from a
manager to a mechanic. She invited everyone to participate in a celebration of DART’s 50th
anniversary this June. Photo by Liz Babcock
