Trona Railway is meeting topic
The March meeting of the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert will feature Mike Paradise on
the history of the Trona Railway.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 20, 7:30 p.m., at the Historic USO Building, 230 W.
Ridgecrest Blvd.
The American Trona Company decided in 1913 that it needed its own railroad. Paradise’s
presentation will show the history of the railway in old pictures from the groundbreaking in 1914 to the
present day.
He will show some of what the Trona RR has carried in its day — general passengers and
schoolchildren, as well as the coal for the plant and the chemicals produced by Searles Lake and the
various companies that have extracted the mineral wealth there over the years.
Paradise arrived in Ridgecrest with his family (including his dad in the Navy) in 1966. After graduating
from Burroughs High School, he went to work for Kerr McGee in the shipping department.
Eventually, he moved to the railroad company, working his way up to conductor and then into
management. Today he is the manager of train operations. Along the way, he married and had two
daughters.
HSUMD meets on the third Tuesday of the month. All are welcome to attend.
