One week to filing deadline
By REBECCA NEIPP, News Review Staff Writer
With just more than a week left to file for candidacy, one local race has seen eight residents throwing their hats
into the ring for one race, while three others have seen no one file — including the incumbents.
City Clerk Rachel Ford announced that Incumbent Tom Wiknich has qualified, along with challengers Walt Maurer
and Randy Jenkins, for one of the two seats opening up on the Ridgecrest City Council.
Five other candidates have also pulled papers for that race, though their candidacies have not yet been validated.
Those candidates include Herman Foster Sr., Betty Bassinger, Edward Smith, Christina Witt and Larry Lewis. Ford
said that council candidates must gather signatures from their constituents, which then have to be verified by the
clerk, before they can be added to the ballot.
Monica Medina from the Kern County Elections Department said that extra step required for the council race could
be the reason that no one has yet added their names to the races for Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of
Education, Indian Wells Valley Airport District Board of Directors and IWV Water District Board of Directors.
The school board race has one seat available in Randsburg, currently held by Judy Dietrichson, and three at-large
seats, held by Amy Covert, Tom Pearl and Kurt Rockwell.
The two airport board seats up for reelection are held by Russ Bates and Jim Paris.
The up-for-grabs seats on the water board are being held by Peter Brown and Harold Manning.
The filing deadline for all races is Friday, Aug. 6.
