    Fire officials stress the importance of smoke alarms.
    KCFD officials issued a reminder to Indian?Wells?Valley residents to have a working
smoke alarm in the home, providing early warning of a fire.
    Smoke is the No.1 cause of fire related deaths in the U.S.
     Firefighters from Kern County Fire
Department stations 73, 74 and 77, and
the China Lake Fire Department
responded Sunday at 11:05 a.m. to a
structure fire in the 1500 block of South
Farragut Street in Ridgecrest.
     Upon their arrival, fire crews began
an aggressive attack on a fully involved
detached garage.
     According to a KCFD press release,
the fire was knocked down within 30
minutes, with most of the damage
contained to the garage.
     KCFD Captain Tony Martinez said
firefighters were able to save the main
structure, valued at around $100,000
dollars, however he said, approximately
$20,000 damage was done to an
adjacent home. There were no injuries
and the cause remains under
investigation he said.
