The Board of Trustees of the Maturango Museum has announced plans for a building-expansion project
that will more than double the size of the museum.
The board has authorized the Building Committee to sign a contract for the expansion with Valley Steel, a
Bakersfield company that specializes in designing and building steel buildings.
According to Thom Boggs, Building Committee chair, Valley Steel will construct the expansion in three
phases.
At the completion of Phase 1 the contractor will have completed construction of all of the exterior walls, the
roof and the ceiling. The slab for the addition will be complete and fully insulated, and the museum store,
office, restrooms, hallway and break room will be completely finished.
As a result the store will more than double in size and will be able to provide a much more diverse
selection of merchandise, books and DVDs of interest to local residents and the thousands who visit the
museum each year from all over the world.
The museum has approximately $600,000 in its Building Fund — enough to complete Phase 1 of the
building project.
Phase 2 will involve completing the rest of the expansion includingin a much larger Sylvia Winslow Exhibit
Gallery, temporary exhibit area, enlarged long-term storage  and docents’ work areas and a general work and
storage area.
The larger exhibit gallery will permit not only larger exhibits but also  larger audiences for chamber
concerts, lectures and special events.
Phase 3 will involve reconfiguration of the current museum space to significantly expand the collection
storage area and make other changes to better utilize the entire facility.
Completion of Phases 2 and 3 of the project will require raising an additional $350,000. through a
combination of fundraising and grants.
According to President of the Board of Trustees  Steven Boster,  “Our goal is to have phase 1 completed
before the end of 2011 – which will coincide with the 25th anniversary for the museum at its current site.” The
goal for project completion will be before the end of 2012 – which will coincide with the 50th anniversary for
the Museum which began on base in 1962.
Executive Director and CEO Harris Brokke said “the expansion of the museum is crucial for the museum
to provide the services that the community has come to expect.  Ridgecrest is a growing area and the
Museum, after expansion, will be able to better serve the needs and expectations of local residents and the
visitors from around the world that enjoy the Museum every year.”
