City, two residents honored
with Kern COG awards
Developer asks city to keep Walmart lot ‘open’
By REBECCA NEIPP, News Review Staff Writer

A Ridgecrest man was killed Jan. 12 when his motorcycle struck a pole in the 700 block
of Bowman Road.
At around 4:30 p.m., John Henry Kichak, 51, was traveling at undetermined rate of speed
when his vehicle apparently veered off the road. When emergency personnel arrived on
the scene, they transported him to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital.
Kichak was born in Milwaukee, Wisc., on Oct. 3, 1959 to John W. Kichak and Barbara
Dupuy. The younger John was a Boy Scout who enjoyed life and was always happy. He
attended Burroughs High School, then graduated from Mesquite High School in 1978. He
worked in construction for 30 years.
John is survived by his parents Barbara Dupuy (Chester) and John W. Kichak (Mary),
daughters Nicole Williams (Ben) of Tucson, Ariz., Michele Weller (Ron) of Big Rapids,
Mich., and Caitlin Kichak of Cave Jct, Ore.; son John Patrick Kichak of Arizona; sisters
JoEllen Turnbaugh (Greg) of Ridgecrest, Julie Hammon (Dave) of Fairfield, Calif., Jean
McClung (Dan) of Ridgecrest, Jayne Beavers (Barry) of San Antonio, Texas, Rachel Dupuy
(Jeff) of Fresno and Angela Grato of Carson City, Nev.; brothers John Michael Kichak of
Dayton, Nev., Joseph Kichak of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and James Kichak of Ridgecrest. More
survivors are granddaughter Abigail Weller and grandson Damien Williams, along with
numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 17, at
Holland Memorial Chapel in Ridgecrest.

The developer of a lot near the proposed Super Walmart project brought to the
Ridgecrest City Council, at last week’s meeting, his concern that a wall between the
Walmart lot and his own would hinder realization of a vision to create a regional retail
center. Jim Fallgatter said that he brought his concerns to Walmart, but did not get a
satisfactory response. City officials apparently agreed that the request was within the city’s
purview, but Fallgatter complains that he has seen no such changes from the city.

Locals love organic food source
The reasons to eat organic food grown locally are many.
Thanks to Rebecca Rozenberg and an alliance of Californian
farmers known as Abundant Harvest Organics, local organic
foods have never been more accessible — or affordable — to
residents of Ridgecrest and Inyokern.
Vernon Paterson is the founder of Abundant Harvest Organics,
which is a modified CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture,
concept located in Kingsburg, approximately 213 miles from
Ridgecrest and halfway between Bakersfield and Fresno.
