Vacation Bible School
     The Community Light Opera and Theatre Associ-ation has
announced that Michael Norris is the winner of the 2011 Ken
Armstrong Memorial Scho-larship.   
    The scholarship, a $500 award given each year to a the
performing arts, was established by the Armstrong family in
loving memory of Ken Armstrong, who supported CLOTA by
building sets, hauling scenery to and from performance
locations and performing other essential behind-the-scenes
tasks.
    Michael, the son of Bill and Naomi Norris of Ridgecrest,
plays cello and has, over the past year, been a sectional
leader in the Burroughs Orchestra.  His school activities have
included the orchestra, newswriting, the California Scholarship
Federation, and cross country.  
    Michael performed with the Desert Community Orchestra
during the 2008-2010 seasons and with the Eastern Sierra
Symphony Orchestra in 2010. He has performed at Grace
Lutheran Church (2008-10), Ridgecrest Healthcare Center,
High Desert Haven, the Maturango Museum and the NAWS
Childcare Center.  This past year he, also, participated in
benefit concerts for Habitat for Humanity and the Peter Pinto
Music Scholarship.  
    As an Eagle Scout, Michael has worked on numerous
service projects such as building fencing for the Bureau of
Land Management, constructing park benches, painting
playground equipment at local schools and refurbishing flags
used to line avenues at China Lake.  He has built fencing for a
deployed reservist, planted trees at the Ridgecrest Women’s
Shelter, collected and sorted food for the Salvation Army and
Second Harvest, performed yardwork at his church and for
Habitat for Humanity, and filled luminaries at the Relay for Life.

His plans include becoming a certified Suzuki Strings teacher and working with other Scouts to help them
acquire their music badges.
   Michael, who graduated from Burroughs with a 3.74 GPA, will attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he
plans to major in computer science and, if possible, minor in music.

Kyle Logan
Kyle Logan, Burroughs High School class of 2007, received
his bachelor’s degree in applied theology from California
Baptist Univer-sity on May 7. He graduated magna cum laude
and will attend graduate school at Beeson Divinity School in
Birmingham, Ala., in fall  2011. Kyle is the son of Pastor Bill
and Susan Logan of Ridgecrest.
Local grad accepted to JWU
Demetria (Demi) Hayman
    Local high school student Demetria (Demi) Hayman graduated alongside five other Central California
Connections Academy students during a commencement ceremony June 13 at Laguna Hills Community Center.
    An aspiring chef, Hayman was accepted into the prestigious Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.,
on an academic scholarship.  She has been passionate about culinary arts since age seven and hopes to own
her own restaurant, following in the footsteps of famous JWU alum, Emeril Lagasse.
    Hayman balanced a position as an assistant to a personal chef with her education by attending Central
California Connections Academy, a public K-12 virtual school.
    In addition to her culinary background, Demi also enjoys history, placing eighth out of 900 students in the
state for the National History Day competition last year.  Her project was on the history, use and innovation of
tanks beginning in World War I.
