The Inyokern Rotary Club has changed its name
to the Rotary Club of Indian Wells Valley. The name
change was made to increase membership and to
serve more of the Eastern Sierra. The club under its
new name continues as part of District 5240, which
includes 73 clubs in areas such as Ventura and
Santa Barbara.
Rotary’s new president, Dr. Diana Watkins, takes
the helm from past president Alana Stein. Under
Stein’s leadership last year, the club was awarded
the Governor’s Super Club honor. The club was
also awarded two district honors, Best Small Club
for community service and Best Small Club in all of
District 5240.
At the District Assembly Awards in Buelton last
month, the Rotary Club of IWV was again named
Best Small Club. The club’s design of programs for
all parts of the desert is a major reason it won this
honor. “Our little club!” said Watkins in amazement.
She confirmed that in addition to a host of new
projects (see related story, this issue), the club will
continue to furnish food baskets to needy families,
work on the international project Polio Plus, support
the Women’s Center and pursue other projects in
which Stein showed the way.
For example, the club will continue to support efforts to keep Inyokern’s historic Town Hall open and
functioning. The rummage sale Rotary of IWV held July 8 and 9 to raise funds to keep Town Hall doors open
succeeded in raising $1,100. In addition, two checks were made payable to the Inyokern Chamber of
Commerce, which is headquartered in the building, to help with the chamber’s operating expenses.
“We are so grateful to the community for supporting the rummage sale,” said Watkins.
Youth leadership training such as RYLA camp is always part of the yearly goals. The club’s literacy
program has been furnishing dictionaries and children’s books and plans to host an essay-writing contest
this year.
The club plans to continue its support to Inyokern Elementary School. A sell-out IWV Summer Talent
Challenge raised $1,193  last year to help the school with whatever it needed.
Last year the club gave the school 25 fully loaded backpacks for books. This year, Gail Marie Petty, whose
husband, Sam Schoenhals sits on Rotary’s Vocational Committee, has helped to purchase enough book
bags for the whole school.
On Aug. 19 the book bags will be presented at an ice cream social where parents and students meet
teachers and locate students’ classrooms.
The Rotary Club of Indian Wells Valley meets every Sunday night at the Inyokern Town Hall. Meetings start
at 6:30 p.m.
The focus will be on energized speakers engaged in providing skills, services and vocations to the
constituents of our valley.
