Haber completes basic training
Johnson helps Cambodians
Navy Seaman Claire E. Haber, daughter of Anne and Robert A. Haber of Ridgecrest, recently completed
U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard
and aircraft safety.
An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is Battle Stations, an exercise that gives recruits the skills and
confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. Battle Stations is designed to galvanize the basic warrior
attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application
of basic Navy skills and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. Its distinctly Navy flavor was
designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
Haber is a 2000 graduate of Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class William M. Johnson, son of Heidi and William Johnson of Ridgecrest, and
fellow sailors assigned to amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and embarked
Marines of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit participated in a community service project at the House of
Family children’s shelter in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
The shelter is funded by the School of Public Health and Social Work of St. Elizabeth and serves as a
refuge for HIV/AIDS-positive orphans or vulnerable children. Sailors and Marines helped make a stone
walkway for the shelter. Afterwards they played games, danced and even provided basic medical treatment
for the kids.
New Orleans deployed in early November in support of the nation’s maritime strategy and is now
conducting theater security cooperation missions in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
Alongside LPD-18 is the amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52), the amphibious
assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) and embarked 11th MEU, which make up the Makin Island
Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).
The mission of the Makin Island ARG is to help provide deterrence, promote peace and security,
preserve freedom of the seas and provide humanitarian/disaster response as well as supporting the Navy’
s maritime strategy when forward deployed.
Johnson is a 1999 graduate of Lone Pine High School. He joined the Navy in November 2006.
