The next meeting of the China Lake Astronomical Society will be held Feb. 6, at the Maturango Museum,
100 E. Las Flores Ave., at 7:30 p.m.
The February program will be general discussion of astronomy.
There will be no more star parties until March.
Celestial Calendar
1. Jupiter joins Venus in the evening sky this month. Look for it in the southwest at dusk on the border of
Aries and Pisces. On Feb. 26 the crescent moon passes about 5 degrees to the right of Jupiter.
2. Mars moves to Virgo this month, where it rises in the east about 9 p.m. on the first and about sunset at
the end of the month.
3. Saturn rises about 7 degrees ahead of Spica at about 11:30 p.m. at the start of the month and 9:30 p.m.
at the end of the month. Look for them in the southeast after they rise.
4. Mercury becomes visible in the western evening sky on the last 10 days of the month. On Feb. 22
Mercury is 5 degrees to the left of the crescent moon.
5. Venus shines in the west in the evening sky all this month. On Feb. 9, Venus is 0.3 degrees north of
Uranus, and on Feb. 25 it is just 3 degrees from the crescent moon.
6. Comet Garradd remains in the constellation of Hercules and is expected to be about 7th magnitude in
February. On Feb. 2 and 3 it passes less than 1 degree from M92.
