Back in 1967 the Maturango Museum put out its third publication, “Common Sense in Desert Travel or
How to Enjoy Boon-docking Without Screaming for the Rescue Squad,” by Carl and Barbara Austin.
The helpful 36-page booklet, illustrated with delightful cartoons by Tony Baby (the same China Lake artist
who gave us “Maturango Mat”), offered helpful tips for safe, enjoyable enjoyment of the desert — all for just
$3.75, a bargain price even 44 years ago.
Recently the Maturango Museum’s Publications Committee reviewed the booklet, which we still have in
multiple copies, and agreed that nearly all the information it contains is still accurate all these decades later.
We then created a one-page insert noting things (like treatment recommended for snakebite) that have
changed in the decades since publication.
Today, the booklet, complete with insert, is available in the museum store — still for just $3.75! How about
picking up several copies as gifts and getting one for yourself while you’re at it?
It’s a good way to remember the late Dr. Carl Austin and an even better way to get some very practical
advice about desert travel. And it’ll fit in your glove compartment!
